Couldn't you have given it a bad review ...Darn! Couldn't you have given it a bad review so I wouldn't feel bad about not being able to afford it? Still, at least I have the original series in the pages of Look & Learn; it's such a tragedy Frank Bellamy died so young as these pages indicate that his artwork was on the verge of exploring exciting new horizons far beyond the cul-de-sac of Garth.

I'm afraid I have to plead guilty in that I cut up all my copies of TV21 too. Fortunately I managed to retain a complete set of Frank's spectacular Thunderbirds sets, unlike your brother! :)

Interesting that you should mention IPC's appalling vandalization of Joe Colquhoun's 'Charley's War' artwork as I've just acquired one of his original Paddy Payne covers for Lion, which is just about the next best thing as far as I'm concerned; it should look great in a frame with a mocked up logo and colour overlay! I agree about the superiority of the old Titan compilations btw - it's such a shame they didn't sell well enough to complete the entire series in that format, especially as Joe was still around then to provide new covers.Phil Rushtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11115717268103349676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3816075755902555378.post-32952711999479961722010-04-03T13:49:46.629+01:002010-04-03T13:49:46.629+01:00I still remind him of this terrible transgression ...I still remind him of this terrible transgression Dave, like you I really was knocked out by the way that Embleton managed to keep the characters on model without losing the dynamics, they were a logical projection of the characters as living breathing people and it was the fact that as a child you weren't feeling in any way patronised by the kind of editorial edict you are referring to that made those stories so engrossing. You just knew that the creative team were enjoying the story as much as you the reader.

Really heart warming to learn that you got a chance to pay homage to Stingray after all those years!Peter Richardsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15566601617123798061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3816075755902555378.post-74630696784137798592010-04-03T13:36:19.387+01:002010-04-03T13:36:19.387+01:00"My dear little brother... actually favoured ..."My dear little brother... actually favoured the astronomical guff that was running on the reverse side of Embleton's Stingray."

Argh! Youth is wasted on the young, they say. I hope you found it in your heart to forgive him, Peter :-)

Years after saving up Zoom wrappers for a Stingray kit and lovingly preserving all my TV21s, I got the chance to write the Stingray books for Random House. The editors insisted on the artist drawing the characters with big heads and tiny bodies, like the puppets, which really irritated me because as a kid I never saw them that way. In my mind's eye they looked the way Embleton drew them!Dave Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14468228790874490693noreply@blogger.com
